What’s the UK’s Most-Loved Sandwich in 2020?

Every once in a while, you get some answers that make you doubt everything you believe in. Our poll results for the UK’s most favourite sandwich is one of them. According to the polls, the favourite sandwich of the UK is…

*Drumroll*

…BURGER.

Our survey results have put an end to the age-old debate: whether a burger is a sandwich or not. The answer is an emphatic YES.

Among the 2000 Brits surveyed, 25% voted Burgers—beef or chicken—as their favourite sandwich, 23% chose ham and cheese, and 22% preferred cheese and pickle.

Clearly, Britain loves a butty. In recent years, we’ve also seen a surge in sandwich orders on Foodhub, which indicates that the nation’s love for sandwiches is increasing too. Likely, our tastes are changing – the classic ham and cheese is no longer a favourite sandwich nationwide, and burgers have taken its place.

A sandwich is defined as a food that typically consists of two pieces of bread with fillings such as vegetables, slices of cheese, and/or meat. So, the humble burger is fairly one. But we anticipate that the burger being voted as the UK’s most-loved sandwich is destined to stir up a scrumptious debate.

Our favourite sandwich poll has touched other controversies as well—hotdogs have won 9% of votes and kebab 7%.

Where Do the Other Classic Varieties Stand?

The iconic BLT has got 17% of votes, the classics bacon and egg butty and prawn and mayo have won 16% and 18% of votes, the ham sandwich managed to get 15%, the beef sandwich 12%, and the UK’s guilty pleasure—the fish finger sandwich—has obtained 14% of the total votes.

How and When Do Brits Prefer their Sandwiches?

When it comes to preference, two slices of bread with fillings is a definite winner, a third of the nation says so. Next to it, stands the famous sliced wholemeal bread, and sliced granary bread and the traditional baguette comes right after. Around a third (36%) prefer their fillings to be meat-based. However, our latest top-10 sandwich list states that the UK equally likes the non-meat varieties.

Despite burgers having taken its spot on the top, 77% of Brits are still traditional about having their sandwiches at lunchtime.
