On the occasion of National Pizza Day on 9th February,
Foodhub conducted a survey to find the most popular pizza toppings in the UK and look at what we found!
The data was collected from an order data of over five million pizza orders from over 10,000 takeaways listed on the Foodhub platform to determine people’s preferences when it comes to pizza. Shockingly, Margherita was overwhelmingly the most popular, accounting for 44% of pizzas ordered through Foodhub app and website. Pepperoni came in second place (16%), followed by meat feast (8.6%) and then surprisingly, doner meat (6.7%).
Come, have a look at the data of the most popular pizza toppings ordered through Foodhub.
Despite the rise of some new food habits like – healthy eating, vegetarianism and veganism, vegetarian toppings (aside from classic Margherita) only accounted for 3.7% of orders.
The notoriously debated Hawaiian topping came in fifth place, ahead of BBQ and chicken toppings. (Quite a shocker, innit?)
Wil Chung, Marketing Manager of Foodhub, says: “Takeaway pizza toppings differ greatly when ordered from a takeaway compared to when people dine at a restaurant. With takeaways, people want indulgent food they typically wouldn’t eat every day – it’s a treat. I think this is why we have seen a skew towards meat-based toppings. Takeaway pizzas are also more likely to be shared with family and friends than those in a restaurant, hence why a classic margherita is still the most popular.” Well, Margherita definitely takes the crown but other toppings are not so behind.
